Jan Karol’s campaigns to Muscovy in 1610‒1612 and 1617‒1618
After the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth declared war on Muscovy, Jan Karol Chodkiewicz participated in the siege of Smolensk (which was taken in 1611); later (in 1611‒1612), he led the Commonwealth’s army to Moscow. In 1617‒1618, he was in command of the army in the Moscow campaign headed by Prince Władysław; his military talent, command experience and intelligent actions made it possible to conclude the Deulin Truce (1618-12-11) in favor of the Commonwealth in particularly difficult circumstances.
