Studies of Chodkiewicz

This is the first comprehensive documented biography of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz. It is written in excellent style by the Jesuit priest, educator and historian Adam Stanisław Naruszewicz (1733‒1796), one of the most famous Enlightenment writers of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This biography was republished in many editions.

The book edited by the librarian and publisher Władisław Chomętowski (1829‒1876) contains letters from Jan Karol Chodkiewicz to his wife Zofia and son Hieronim Chryzostom, letters from Zofia to their son, letters to Jan Karol from his uncle Hieronim Chodkiewicz, the Castellan of Vilnius, and from his brother Aleksander Chodkiewicz, the Voivode of Trakai.

This is the second edition of the translation of the heroic poem by Laurencijus Bojeris (the first one came out in 1979). The translator is the Associate Professor of Classical Philology at Vilnius University, Dr. Benediktas Kazlauskas (1909‒1995). 

This innovative and well-documented work captures the personality of Teodor Lacki (1554‒1610), the author of the memoir entitled “A Lithuanian Knight’s Ten-Year Deeds in the Livonian War”, and discusses his life in the broad context of the Livonian War. The author of this monograph is Dr. Darius Antanavičius, a laureate of the Lithuanian Science Prize.

Based on numerous archival sources and historiographic works, this study captures the history of the Chodkiewicz family, tracing it from the legendary forefathers to the most prominent figures of the 16th century: Aleksander (1475‒1549), Hieronim (circa 1515‒1561), Grzegorz (circa 1517‒1572), Jerzy (post-1520‒1569) and Jan Hieronimowicz (circa 1537‒1579). This is the most comprehensive study of the Chodkiewicz family up to the generation of Jan Karol and his brother Aleksander.

This is a Lithuanian translation of a collective monograph published in Ukrainian in 2011. The copiously illustrated publication conceptually discusses the course of the 1620‒1621 war between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Turkey and presents the personalities of the principal commanders.
