Mother

The mother and daughter always had a strong spiritual connection. Most of the traits of her character – her vitality, immeasurable energy – M. Alseikaitė-Gimbutas, you might say, inherited directly from her mother.  Dr. V. Alseikienė was virtually unknown to a wider audience as a civic activist or as a distinguished medical professional, even though she was an exceptional person, who [...] completed her higher education abroad; much contributed to transporting hospital supplies from Minsk to Vilnius at the end of World War I and to establishing the Lithuanian Hospital in Vilnius. She maintained contacts with the greatest luminaries of Lithuanian culture: Povilas Višinskis, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, Jonas Basanavičius (who breathed his last breath in her presence).
